A group of Toronto music veterans have spent the past year or so playing lower key psych under the name The Saffrom Sect. Among them are Gaven Dianda, formerly of the late great Flashing Lights, and Jay Anderson. drummer in the infamous, unstoppable jamboree outfit known as The Old Soul.
Describing themselves as "modieval music" for dwellers of the "twilight parlour", the Sect might just be the spark to bring out Toronto's brewing psych scene. They have released their first EP, Phosphorous Flash, and it's so beautifully self-produced, one wonders why more music like this can't be made more often. It's available at Fig Records, run by the lovely Sara, who once hosted "The Tender Parade" a show that used ot be on the same day as ESB on CIUT. It's the first release on the label, but if Fig turns out to be anything like her old radio show, it wouldn't be a surprise if her endeavour reaches, or even surpasses levels concurrent with the likes of Paper Bag or the defunkt Three Gut.
Tune in to ESB this Friday to hear the EP in its entireity. It will hit you like salvia...you'll turn it on, fall right in, and then realize the whole crazy trip only lasted for about 13 minutes.

Make sure to check out Pass the Dynamite at Stone's Place if you're in the Toronto area. What was originally supposed to be a one-off night of smashin' soul and rock from the 50s and 60s is now making its way to the club for a second go. Come out and dance to the music provided by Serge Cassano, Dionne Warpig and the lovely Elaine Banks of CIUT 89.5FM.
Also, at College and Shaw they're throwing the World Cup Weekend which will more than likely feature some street performances by the aforementioned Maracatu Nunca Antes, the hottest (in both sound and looks) rhythm group in Canada.

PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE
Sorry for the delayed update. Last week, we were away in West Virginia livin' it up in luxury, which, as I'm told, is not something that can be done very often in the old mining state to the South.
But now it's back to life in smoggy Toronto, where subways explode. Of course, while we were away, we made sure y'all were good n' taken care of. Hence, the pre-recorded wondershow that is ESB Classics...

13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS - Rollercoaster
DEMON FUZZ - Past, Present and Future
SILVER APPLES - Dancing Gods
DAVID STOUGHTON - I Don't Know if it's You
ROBERT CHARLEBOIS - Long Flight 500

THE LANGLEY SCHOOLS MUSIC PROJECT - Rhiannon
GUIDO + MAURIZIO DE ANGELIS - New Special Squad
The Demon Fuzz track was the psych rock tune that "rose to a crescendo" in an earlier review of the No Dynamics Conical Revolution show. Dan Vila was nice enough to hook us up with the track, so let's share it, cause sharing is fun, and the record is virtually impossible to find.
The De Angelis Brothers track comes to us from Beretta 70 of the brilliant Crippled Dick Hot Wax label.
You can get a large swath of the Modern Pickles collection at Satan Belanger's rare Montreal music archive.
