"Ленин и Шумов" Торонто

First off : let's tip the giant hat to Lenin I Shumov, who will be playing their final gig next weekend. They have ravaged local ears with tough love for a few years now, and will be remembered for some raucous shows and beautiful records. Also, congrats to Eugene (and The Boat) for showing up in Vice as a "Do". Eugene can still be heard rockin out in Rozasia, while past members of Lenin appear in bands across the city like The Old Soul and The Silt.

Second: come down to Stones' Place on Friday night for Pass the Dynamite, a CIUT show that is taking its selections to the club scene for one night only.

Third: we'll be filling in for Don Zentner's Radio Oblio, an open format show only on CIUT, Friday morning from 6 to 9am (in about five hours, actually). We'll be airing what was to be three future Sound Basement specials, so tune in tomorrow for our Classics Vol. 4 and 5, as well as our Francias Speciale...and of course, don't forget to tune in at Noon ET as well for our regular weekly show.

Making spins this week in the ESB catalogue parlour:

SON HOUSE - Country Farm Blues
SON HOUSE - Clarksdale Moan

This man is one of the earliest blues greats, and only over the past 20 years have they been able to discover much of his music. Keep in mind he was choppin licks when Robert Johnson was suckin teats. In fact, I think Johnson might have fed from House regularly, according to legend.

No masters survived, so quality is piss poor noise wise. Still, these songs bop righteously. Read about these recordings here Thanks to my man Dave for the tipoff.

THE CREEPING NOBODIES - Sound of Joy

The Sound of Joy will be out on Blocks May 2nd. Recorded with Jeff McMurrich and Wharton Tiers. On June 2nd, they'll be having a release party with The Wharton Tiers Enemble at The Horseshoe.

OFF THE INTERNATIONAL RADAR - Deploy the Plot Ending Device
Produced by Sandro Perri of Glissandro 70, which meshes beautifully with the group's organ based dub sound. To quote an old rommate of mine: "Sandro Perri is Toronto's best kept secret"...or something to that effect.

ALEX LUKASHEVSKY - Party in Pain
The Deep Dark United singer releases a solo album. It's very quiet, and almost solely focused on Alex and his floaty moonbeam guitar playing.
