ELECTION TIME!

Woohoo, Canadian election time! I can't wait, I'm like a kid on Christmas. I'm pretty sure I know hwat I'll get this year: a Conservative minority, which is something a kin to socks and underwear.

In Quebec, I'm quite happy the campaigns are as typically Quebecois as they've ever been. As NOW Toronto's Joseph Wilson commented this week, the Bloc's theme song this year is "far more passionate than anything created for the Protestant sensibilities in Ontario." Quite right, he is. English Canadians don't like to sing cheezy songs. In fact, they don't like to sing at all. Les Quebecois, on the other hand, don't stop singing, so when an election campaign comes along it's not unusual for a million songs like this to pop up:

CHANSON "HEURESEMENT"

It's based on the Bloc campaign slogan, which translates to something like "Fortunately, the Bloc is here." That's exactly my problem. "Here" means Quebec, which doesn't mean the rest of Canada, which doesn't mean federal, which means FUCK OFF! Run provincially and stop hijacking the country with your stupid songs.

What a dangerous party. They have no interest in maintaining Canadian culture so why should we even think of them in a positive fashion? As the music indicates, the Bloc are a seperatist party, through and through.

JE ME SOUVIENS

Another hilarious election tune, this one about the sponsorship scandal

COMPTEZ SUR LE BLOC

I'm totally baffled by this Bollywood themed jam that has no lyrics other than the title. The nordic fiddle playing and Indian guitar riffage work nicely together. Don't expect an independent Quebec to be so multi-cultural.

An independent Quebec might sound more like this:

LUNDI MATIN

This song I find interesting, and a good strategy in all fairness. Traditional Quebecois songs are loads of fun and can be quite complex. It's common for these songs to add and then repeat verses as the song moves along, so you get this tune that's like a continually lengthening ladder. This ad is the culmination of a series of ads in which the Bloc gave you a different decision to vote for them for each day of the week.

I suggest you browse the Bloc's media site to hear their clever radio ads, in which Gilles Duceppe calls Quebeckers and asks for their vote.

Gilles is known for his multi-disciplined vision for governing. Here he learns Zen from the master himself. He also dabbled in the '60s with communism and joined a hard core Marxist commune.

In other election music news:

Martin pledges to mend Canada-U2 relations.

RIP

RIP Peter Kucparic

1983-2006

I'll never forget the music we made together.

ALLMAN BROS - Whipping Post
Pete and I used to play this song together in a blues band we started in Kingston, Ontario in 2001.

Barry McGuire - Eve of Destruction
Pete won a lot of fans when he sang this song at our annual rock n' roll review in high school in Winnipeg.

I don;t know how or why he took his life, but I shall not judge his actions. He was good to me and others while he lived and I'll never forget him.

May the lord be kind to WFMU for their outstanding broadcasts, but most notably, their archive. I nominate them for the Brilliant Awards for the following recent broadcasts:

An interview with Margot Leverett, leader of her group called the Klezmer Mountain Boys. Comes with tonnes of their tunes. So put on your overalls and your talles and stomp on some glass, 'cause you're gettin hitched, boy!

Nazi parodies of American swing bands. Joseph Goebbels' propaganda band who took decadent Yankee music and used it as a front to deride democracy, Churchill and the Jews. Enthralling, appalling stuff, especially for collectors. And while you're on the topic, you may want to look at this book. I know I will.

Well, we're back for the New Year. Apparently the pre-record I made for January 6th didn't make it to air so I apologize to all who had to listen to the repeat...but then again, not really, because the repeat was a better show anyway.

I missed the Anagram CD release party last night because I am a fat, lazy self-absorbed bastard. I promise to never miss them again. Reports from the Stilleposters say that eye-glasses were broken and asses were firmly kicked, Here's some music from the new album, After Dark:

ANAGRAM - Right Over There

Yesterday's show's playlist:

LENIN I SHUMOV - In C
THE MAE SHI - Vampire Veats
THE MAE SHI - Heartbeeps 2
DEATH SENTENCE PANDA - A Time to Bear Arms

MSTRKRFT - Paris

"Easy Love" cut out for some reason less than a minute in, so for those of you who haven't heard it, there's a download of it on The Prettiest Pony, an amazing blog where they also have new Baile Funk.

Please keep in mind that the show will be re-broadcast every Sunday from 2-3pmET for the time being, only on CIUT.
