ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!!

1)We have a new time slot...Tuesdays @ 5-6PM ET.

2)The show will now be called "Electric" rather than "Eclectic" Sound Basement. Why? Because the word eclectic brings up too many images of 40 year old men with Peter Gabriel obsessions.

Tune in this evening for fresh material from J. Dilla, The Blow, The Rapture and a brand new MSTRKRFT remix of Brazilian Girls.

IT WASN'T ME IT WAS US

Up in the factory district, through a hole in a fence and along a path lit by glow sticks was the entrance to Extermination Music Night II. Inside, the factory floor was dotted with tea lights and foot candles, and flashlights were popping on and off all over the place. Strange sounds could be heard everywhere: ominous clanging and the smashing of glass peaked over the distant, echoing voices of those who wandered into the factory's darker recesses. It wasn't just the bands who made noise in the wee hours.

Handmade firebombs exploded against the factory walls just as Anagram's set started. The whole place smelled of gasoline, and I felt like the cieling would collapse, and there'd be rubble everywhere, carnage, death, fire and mayhem, but still standing would be Anagram's stoic rhythm section and fearless singer. They could survive a nuclear attack and have enough strength to fire one off themselves.

Rozasia preceded Anagram with apocalytpic flutes piping high above a mad, pulsating bop underneath.

Let's have more of these...

From the folks who brought you the Don Valley Brickworks show last fall comes another production of EXTERMINATION MUSIC NIGHT at a super-secret time, date and location...super-secret to anyone who doesn't have Google (or a copy of eye weekly, for that matter). It's not too hard to find out where it is on a map, but you've gotta be discreet when you get there, and bring a flashlight, as the organizers requested. The bands, however, are no secret:

ANAGRAM
ROZASIA
FEUERMUSIC BIG BAND (I'm very much in favour of this in particular...imagine how many buckets they'll have!)
CASTLEMUSIK

Support illegality in music, and pay what you can.

"Vlazna a Sediva by Uz Jsme Doma, a Czech sax-punk band that was once banned by the Communist regime.

Bombs fall, and there's not much we can say about it on ESB. This is what it sounds like when one lone Lebanese trumpeter with nerves of steel braves an aerial bombardment to perform an experimental duet with the IDF ordnance. His name is Mazen Kerbaj, and he's a prolific experimental musician and graphic artist in Beirut.

Please check out his blog.

I think a klezmer group should play during a Katyusha strike in Haifa, or maybe an Afghani troupe lay down some rhythms while the Taliban and NATO clash. My open statement to musicians in conflict zones around the world: don't give up on your music. Don't get me wrong, we all want you to be safe. No one would ever ask of you to put yourself in imminent danger to make or record music...but if you can safely and cautiously continue to express yourselves as you would in times of relative peace, then by all means, record music, and send it to us, like Mazen Kerbaj has. Music listeners in North America are very comfortable, and your work might inspire more of us to think beyond the freshest remix or the latest show and realize that music is more than just a light hobby you engage in for fun and enjoyment. To speak with music is to sing the soul itself.

Let's make a compilation out of this. We'll call it MUSIC IS BETTER THAN WAR.

By the way, Canada, in case you haven't noticed, we're totally at war in Afghanistan, and it's only intensifying.
