SIGNING OFF

So ends the Electric Sound Basement, in its current form. This week was out last show. I'm relocating for a while, so I won't be able to continue on CIUT. I will, however, try to get some DJ sets out there, and will more than likely have a brand new blog going in a couple of months time, with perhaps a podcast. Please check back for more info in the coming weeks and months.

It's been a blast sharing tracks with you over the airwaves over the past few years, and I'll miss the thrill of walking into the studio every Tuesday at 5pm, waiting to press the buttons as the preceding show comes to an end. To all of you who called me to give props, or sent me emails, and especially those who sent in some hard earned cash during our fundraising drives, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT******

The time has come to let y'all know...

The Electric Sound Basement will be doing its final show on CIUT at the end of this month. Your host, Guy Stevos, is moving to France for an indefinite period. While I'm thrilled to be exploring new places, and meet new people, I will most certainly miss, with a deep langour, the environs of CIUT, and its beloved listeners. Thus, with a heavy heart, I announce my departure from this show that has been a weekly staple in my life, and hopefully for some of you as well, since 2003.

As for the content of this month's shows, there will be no goodbye-style broadcasts of favourite moments, or best-of selections. ESB was never about that. We'll end the show exactly how we've been doing it since it began: with new tracks that you've never heard before.

I will continue, from my abode in rural France, to do a monthly DJ set, and if I can get it together, a podcast may be in the works...and as tempted as I am to make you that promise, I won't, for fear of breaking it. BUT...The Electric Sound Basement will still exist in some form, and this blog will by all means live on, even if for a while it's merely on a sporadic basis.

In any case, we've got one show left so let's make the most of it.

Finally got a chance to chill with Dan Haid in the studio today. It was really cool to hear his take on some of the more cerebral aspects of track making. He's classically trained, and from what I gather, he wandered into electronic music through film score work, finding himself saving time and money by working with synthesizers in lieu of live instruments. We got to listen to a brand new track as well, and some collabo work with his friend Pete Huang. They go by the name Banger and Mash, not to be confused with the UK's Bangers & Mash, or for that matter the delicious breakfast.

Two very special features today on the show...

The first is Dan Haid, a local producer who got in touch with me last week and sent over some of his exceptional work. During better economic times, he was composer for film, moonlighting as a DJ and producer...now it's the other way around. He rides a Roland JX-305 Groovesynth through the progressive house lane on The Great Dance Music Highway, speeding quickly past the exit ramp into Tranceville. It's always nice when a producer can progressive without being excessive. We look forward to hearing more from Dan Haid, in anticipation of a forthcoming album for the fall. He's got a campus radio background as well, having hosted his own show on CKMS, so hopefully he'll join us sometime in the studio.

Second, we come to the close of our More Proof Madness 2009 series, with one final set from Johnny Hockin. Check it out, it's got an exclusive Piltopriest remix in there, not to mention track after track representing Johnny's genre-jumping sensibilities.

Welcome Woodhands, our guests this week. In the past year, they've been recognized around the world for their album Heart Attack, toured China and Japan, rocked SXSW, ended up on numerous top ten lists and critics polls at the end of '08, and were one of the most heavily played Canadian artists on campus radio.

Today, we feature The Hues (aka Alex Calder) of Edmonton, soon to be a Vancouverite. He's been sending us tracks for about a year now, and we figured it's time to show him some 'spect up in the place. We talk about how pirated software and brutal Canadian winters can have an effect on your musical productivity.

Here's his latest track, In Town, exclusive for the inhabitants of the Electric Sound Basement dwellers...and for good measure, here's one from a while back, Ellen Brown.

And without further ado, our interview with The Hues!

GS: What's up with Edmonton and all the synthesizer geniuses who come from there? From Cadence Weapon to Nik Kozub's Nrmls Wlcm to the now-Toronto based expats Pilotpriest and DVAS, and now The Hues, are we in for an Edmontonian global takeover?

TH: Haha I'm not too sure actually. I dunno if I'd classify myself with those guys though, they're the synth geniuses.

I think most of the reason some people here work on music so hard is because of the shitty long winters we have. Also, there is never anything going on, none of the bands or shows people want to see ever come here, so people stay in their rooms a lot more and make music with their free time.

Yeah, Nik Kozub and Cadence Weapon really keep it together here. They really promote Edmonton as much as possible as a city with lots of good talent. I will be moving away to Vancouver March 2nd, so I guess I won't be in Edmonton anymore making music.
It'll always be my home though. Actually, I'm sure I'll probably move back here in a year or something when I get too scared out in Vancouver haha.

GS: Imagine The Hues was more than just Alex Calder. What if The Hues were a full-on, several member touring spectacle? What would that look like?

TH: Well, originally, it started out as me and all of my friends actually.
There were like 8 of us. We played one show, it went horribly! It was just a bunch of us dicking around on a stage with no rehearsal whatsoever.

Afterwards, I wanted people to think that there were lots of members in The Hues, but in reality, it was just me making the music, hence me keeping the name. I used to make lots of music with friends, but after a while, I just realized I find it really hard to make music with people. At least the music that I want to make.

But also, speaking of The Hues having more members and playing live, I have been getting together with some of the guys from the group DVAS who still live here.
We will be opening up for Shout Out Out Out Out on Feb 28th and March 1st at the Starlight Room in Edmonton. I am pretty excited, we'll be using real instruments for the entire thing.

GS: Tell us about how you make your music. Where do you start and how do you know when you've hit something right?

TH: That's a tricky question. Most of the time it starts with a keyboard line.
My music making has changed a lot in the last couple of months. I switched from using the program Reason to using Ableton, it was a really nice switch. But when I got Ableton I started to make songs much differently.

Unfortunately, my pirated version of Ableton that I had doesn't work anymore, so making music lately has been very tricky. If it's done one thing though, it's made go back to playing all of my instruments again. I've also taken a liking to using Garage Band to record things into.

But yeah, when I figure out something that I think is catchy, I really just work around it so much. I can sit for hours and hours just working on one part of a song.
Other times, I can make a song in like 15 minutes.

Pretty much all the music I make, especially the songs I put lots of work into, I absolutely hate afterwards.

GS: What's on your mind these days as far as inspiration? What makes your creative clock tick?

TH: Kind of weird actually.

I find when I don't listen to any other dance music, I make the best dance music.
I've been listening to a lot of people like Ariel Pink and John Maus lately. It's kind of the more lo-fi side of pop music, if that makes sense.

But I feel when I get ideas from listening to songs, it's never really dance music.
Don't get me wrong, I love listening to all the latest Breakbot remixes and Shazam songs that come out, etc. I dunno, maybe it's more like, I can't compare to those guys at all, so when I hear their songs it's such a love/hate thing.

I could get really deep into it and say something about how when I am feeling the most depressed and out of place I make the best music and feel the most creative, but I think that's the same for everybody. When you're not content you strive to feel content, so I guess that's what spawns creativity in people.

GS: Are there any other musical ideas you'd like to be involved in? Like, I dunno, some kind of down-tempo side project, or a marching band?

TH: Well, I really like the idea of a punk band. So hopefully when I move away I will start a two or three piece punk band with some friends. I just love seeing punk shows, although it's seldom that Edmonton gets them. That's another thing that I have a love/hate relationship with.

Punk music fans always seem to be such elitists, so I really treat my punk music listening as a guilty pleasure that stays behind closed doors haha. I think punk music and dance music a quite similar in a lot of ways. I think they stir up a lot of the same emotions. But yeah, I will keep doing The Hues stuff for a long time, I'm sure.
It would be nice to start a punk band, even though I am pretty ignorant of punk music.
I think ignorance is what it takes with punk music though.

Today, our distinguished guests: the cast of Down the Rabbit Hole. I call them a cast because their Friday the 13th party at Augusta House is shaping up to be a real production. They're giving Augusta House an Alice in Wonderland type of vibe. Essentially, the night's allowing you to become Alice, except instead of arriving in Wonderland, you're hitting downtown Toronto in the midst of a groundswell in creativity. There is more art and music happening in Toronto than possibly ever before, so it's only natural that dance music and installation/performance art should develop synergetically.

It'll be a night of interactivity, with DJs and artists creating a collaborative atmosphere that will include installations, painting, poetry and other multimedia. Today we'll speak to some of those artists, and Diana, who's organizing the event.

Nothing shockingly new to report this week, except for more introspection in local press, this time from Now Magazine, for Toronto's new directions in the sound of dance music. You'd be happy to note that almost all of the artists mentioned in the article have been getting frequent rotation here on ESB, an for good reason. Some folks are already hitting up the comments section, criticizing the article for missing out on the "real" arists of the future, knocking the listed producers for their "unoriginality" and "trendiness". Judge at your peril. These artists, whether you dig their sound/scene or not, are an accurate representation of those who have been getting attention beyond Toronto, for their current repertoire of singles and remixes (bootleg or not). Ok, so that's not true at all, but I wish it was. If you're gonna party why drink sludge like Absolut? I'd rather support taste, quality, refinement and fair price rather than mass produced, poorly tested swill.

To prove to you I'm not a corporate shill, here's Ketel One's main facility, The Nolet Distillery. This ain't the Mondavi of vodkas, it's a family run business that has been passed down from generation to generation through a single bloodline, producing cottage-industry product in a an age of blandness and mass consumption.

And of course, they gave me free vodka (loads of it) so I should at least hold up my end of the bargain :)

More Proof is back with a new blog, and an October edition that imports Montreal's remix mega-machine, CFCF. The last time I checked this guy out, on his home turf at The Green Room on St. Laurent, he dropped The Raccoons theme song, no joke. How's that for obscure Can-Con? That's right, Mike Silver will freak you out, so get on down to the Drake this Friday night and you won't miss out.

Also, this week on the show, we hear from a new duo made up of Jarret and Meaghan. They're from the unlikely environs of Peterborough, a sleepy hamlet north-east of Toronto not entirely known for dance music. But it's in these small towns that big city dreams are kept alive by the youth who crave to party their nights away. I recall my university days in a similar place, a small, tucked away town in Ontario called Kingston. We could have used the likes of Fire Flower Revue and their side project, Black Tale, to keep our feet moving in those tiny basement parties we'd throw, far far away from the shitty hubs the "normies" took by storm.

From an arts perspective, even a Conservative minority in Parliament doesn't make for good news. Thanks to Bill C-10, the Harper government, with impunity, has started to place "values" as a criteria for funding the arts. Have a band with the word "fuck" in the name? Too bad! You'll no longer be able to claim tax breaks for any government funding you might receive because, well, Canadians don't want anything offensive to be included in arts funding. Just ask Holy Fuck. They slashed them for a few grand on their name alone... and in another move, the Conservatives targeted the movie Young People Fucking, by excomunicating two aides for being on a guest list for the film's premiere...the fuckers!

Remember, kids, that the word FUCK is an old English word that was outlawed by the Normans when they conquered England in 1066.

It's about time we...um, y'know, wrote stuff on this blog again. The days of summer are winding down here in Toronto, but as every year prior to this one shows, the party don't stop just 'cause it's 12 o'clock. There's a lot of action to be had by all now that the horny students are back in the game, what with the Toronto International Fuck Fest about to start. Parties will be thrown around like bras at a Tom Jones concert, guest lists will be a mile long and waits at the door will probably last forever, but what the hell, we're all in it together, yeah? And last call is 4am so in all likelihood, showing up at 2 might not be a bad idea.

This week, expect madness on a grand scale. Thursday might be one of the busiest nights ever for the Electrolites and the Disconians.

Your best bet is Vice's Film festival Ball, a three room and partially outdoor orgy of tunage. It's at U of T's Hart House, and in the majestic and grandiose environs of the Great Hall, you'll find Juan Maclean and a special guest, while the Djs from The Beaver's occasional punk night Off White are outdoors.

Like the Utah Saints, I'm sayin' "Ooh boy, don't you notice something good has been happenin'?"

This month, the music seems to be opening up with the season. Holy Ghost spoke some truth when they said "Hold on until it kills." Winter '08 was all about icy gems, dark disco and bedroom music, as opposed to the glorious free-for-all that that's about to hit us for the rest of the year.

This spring and early summer, we've got a second volume of the Sally Shapiro/Paper Bag Remix Romance comp, full of Toronto artists. The South Rakkas Crew seems to be everywhere these days, and the Nacho Lovers are cutting edits like an old man iin a dark room wielding a razorblade over a reel to reel. Santogold must be on everyone's front porch party playlists by now. Ed Rec 3 is pretty bizarre and brilliant. Mr. Flash leads the pack there with "Over the Top", and SebastiAn makes me want to do something shaky with my knees when he plays "Momy" off the Motor EP. Speaking of Paris: now that Tellier's picking up some steam over here across the pond, while pounding it for France in Eurovision, more people around the world will get laid. Meanwhile, people say Louis La Roché (aka some British kid) is a ripoff artist, but if you see it from the angle of "Um, hey, yeah let's just enjoy dancing for a bit", then you can look past it. He's only guilty of being 17 years old, and he's got a lot of time to work on some more original material.

In Edmonton, the synth heads keep it comin'. The Hues have been an almost weekly presence on this show, and as the chops continue to grow into full-length muttons, the prolific output from wonderkid Alex will pour forth like a rushing stream this season. Cadence Weapon gets crazy, I say, and does a huge tour and wins even more respect. Pilotpriest has well since relocated to Toronto, but he'll more than likely have a release of something in the near future.

I predict this whole dubsteppy reggaeish resurgence will probably crank out a few decent tracks over the summer, and disco is back in a big big way, again, for the second time this decade. Rock music, again, is being all weird, which is great. Ladytron is back, and Portishead is playing psych-rock. DFA will keep releasing those unreal 7"s, which will all turn into EPs and then albums and then huge tours and they'll do it all again in 2011.

Conclusion? 2008 is bangin! Pretty soon it'll be the 2010's and the kids (as in the ones who are 11 right now playing Korg MS20's) will be way ahead of us when we were 13, diddling our junior Fender knockoffs.

Paris...what can I say? It's expensive and strange but pretty spectacular at the end of the day. Got to check out some music out there. I hit up La Fleche D'Or last Friday for a party hosted by Boule à Facettes, featuring Breakbot.

He rocked some tight shit, and the place got pretty bumpin'.

The next night, I hit up Point Éphémère, along the Canal in the dixième. They were hosting some dubstep action, featuring Cotti and Headhunter. Dubstep isn't quite huge yet in Paris, as is the case around the world, but the place was packed.

Vitaminsforyou was kind enough to pass along a copy of the Flesh Python single on vinyl. This is absolutely the last piece of vinyl printed in Canada.

You can get some ordering info and listen to the track here. There was some debate about whether or not this will be the final vinyl product manufactured in our great nation but there's little evidence that any Canadian plants are up for going the vinyl route anymore.

I'm not sure what a Flesh Python is exactly, but I imagine it's a long coil that emerges slowly from your skin in during dark moments of self-doubt. When it's perched and ready to strike, it attacks you with a vicious power, much like the track itself. It's an unforgettable listen, and along with the various remixes by the likes of Jokers of the Scene and Stop Die Resuscitate, it's a release you won't want to miss.

More Proof drops into the Drake, on Thursday, and their friend STA releases the "In Living Colour" single at the same venue on the 26th. It's got a killer remix by D.I.M. on the flipside.

First off, big up to C.A.I.R.O. for a pretty sweet link (see comments in previous posts for a pleasant surprise). Not sure who he is or where he's from (a possible Edmontonian with an abominable connection?), but he's been around the world, so check his blog out, it's in your best interests if you're pondering leaving ol' T.Dizzle for a spell.

Second, major kudos to Jordan Poppenck, who hosts a show on CIUT called The Green Majority, every Friday from 10 to 11am. His Halloween costume this morning was the new Rotman School of Management building at the University of Toronto. In case you're out of the loop on this, Rotman's new building will cause CIUT's historic location at 91 St. George St. to be demolished, and we're forced with a relocation to an as of yet undetermined spot. Ok, so maybe "historic" actually means "oldest and most rotten building on campus", and a new space ain't bad at all, but what's been proposed leaves much to be desired. We could be relocated to a building at McCaul and College, it's an untouched space that we can build ourselves, but it's too far from campus and buried downtown...or we could be crammed into a possible student commons (also a hot-button topic here in La Tourrette d'Ivoire). Either way, we're in the dark and have little to no influence unless we and our listeners do our part to ensure a sound future for our beloved station. Jordan's costume was hilarious - a giant block of cardboard, clad in pinstripe fabric - but when we're actually going to move in the future, we might not be laughing.
