First off, major big-up to ON-OFF. ESB loves it when one of our favourite blogs is also an amazing DJ/remix duo who can open for the likes of Uffie and Feadz when they roll through the city. Make sure to hit up SPIN Gallery on Feb 16th, and if you want a taste of what they have to offer, scroll through their blog and snag some of their tracks and remixes, as well as a truly killer mix session.

Also, more members of the Ed Banger crew roll through Toronto in March, when Mehdi, SebastiAn, Justice and Busy-P drop madness on the Mod Club.

And now, how's about a clip from The Real Toronto, which has been scaring some rich, white people on the news for the past year or so. This piece covers a few moments in the life of a young man on the grind in the Chester Le projects of Scartown, around Vic+Finch. His rap skills come at the end of the clip, but watch the whole thing. Forget for a minute that he's holding a real live fucking gun in your face and just listen to his words.

CIUT Turns 20 Today!

in 1986, we got our licence, and on January 1th, 1987, we aired our first FM broadcast.

Last fall, whent he Viletones played live on Equalizing Distort, it gave CIUT a chance to work with Steve Leckie, one of the only surviving, and still active, punk rockers of the original 76-77 era. Back then, CIUT was called UTR, and it was strictly closed circuit campus radio. It's a pity CIUT wasn't around on terrestrial signal for those years, but we're making up for it now. The scene came first, so we've chosen to recognize what came before us as a part of our own celebrations.

Soon, we'll have live-to-airs with the likes of Teenage Head, and documentary series depicting the 20 years of CIUT, as told by volounteers, staff, listeners, and local musicians, past and present, warts and all. As well, several new shows have made their way to the air over the past coupl of weeks, so we're all excited...check out our schedule, and you will be, too.

Dave Dachs, of The Abstract Index, who has been around just long enough for his 20th anniversary to coincide with the station's own, will play a special two hour dub set, featuring the majestic overtones of his own effects gear, chugging and zapping away at his favourite records of the past 20.

In the meantime, have a look at the Bizzcocks, at the Danforth Music Hall, after the Viletones opened up, in October, 1979.

Ed Banger / Kops Krew NYE Jumpoff at Fractal was quite a good time. Montreal is always a better option than Toronto for New Years, and when the ESB kids heard that DJ Mehdi was headlining this particular bust up, we were obliged to attend. Unforunately, by the time Mehdi took the stage, sound problems and a dwindling crowd meant that his set wasn't as well received as it would have been two hours prior. It should be noted, however, that some fresh Ed Banger material, including some unreleased Uffie tracks, managed to get a few feet back on the floor, and kept the more dedicated listeners considering possible acquisition of these valuable goods.

I'm not sure if I missed or caught Megasoid, the Sixtoo / Hadji Bakara collabo soundsystem, but I'm eagerly awaiting reports. It might just have been that I actually heard them, but was hanging out in the back and not paying attention to who was on stage. It was NYE after all. If such was the case, then I have no complaints. Judging from this clip, I figured they'd be the dark horse show stopper when I watched it earlier that day. I'm sure I'll see Megasoid in an environment where I'm less, uh, distracted by things like sexy bartenders in gold dresses and odd waves of fuzzy feelings (see more pics at rave.ca).

A surprising highlight was an unannounced coup d'etat by Omnikrom, who rocked a couple of tracks with their local friends, causing a cattle rush to the already packed stage. Ghislain Poirier's set started out quite strongly as well, but some sound problems caused a delay, and not the kind that goes "chuggachugchughchuggachuggaagagagagagaaaaaa". It's never fun to hear a club go quiet when it's still bangin', but such is life, and when you've heard banger after banger all night, a few technical failures can be forgiven.

Overall, the strength of the night was the abundance of shokcingly current selections by the locals in Peer Pressure and other party crews. My good friend Seez and I had a decent discussion concerning the brilliance of mashing up LCD Soundsystem's "45:33" with the new Timberlake stuff. When this party was on, I mean, Jayyysus, it was on.
